EDDIE MURPHY AND THE BLACK ROM-COM
Written, Directed, Edited, and Researched by Rae
This video explores how Black romantic comedies evolved from grounded films like Claudine to stylish, mainstream hits like Boomerang, and why Black love stories were often denied the same fantasy and freedom as white rom-coms. Centered around Eddie Murphy, Reginald Hudlin, and a new wave of Black filmmakers in the 1990s, it examines how Boomerang helped redefine what a Black romantic comedy could be.
